Two thirty pm arrived for me to get in the car and travel over to Bryan's home. This would be our second time around in search for C.J. Arriving slightly early I turned the car motor off and dialed Bryan's number. I would wait for him to come out to the car having prepared myself with a good book, mail to leaf through and a fingerhut catalog to browse in.This time of year has us glued to looking for great ideas for Christmas gifts and finding,Lord willing bargains.Soon his door opened up and out he came wearily. He had worked the graveyard shift and had not gotten very much sleep. The two of us with hopeful hearts began our journey to first the Humane Society out in Walker. We found lots of puppies and older dogs watching in hope their masters would walk in and free them of their captivity.Mournful sounds came from them as they would see one more human come in ,only to turn and walk sadly away from them. Looks on their forlorn faces of please, open my cage and let me go home with you. One more time at this place no C.J. With our saging shoulders and unhappy hearts we got in the car to drive over to the Animal Pound on the other side of Grand Rapids. Will C.J be waiting for us over there? There was still room for hope he would be.In we walked seeing a couple with sad faces being told to check back and to not give up looking. This time we didn't need to fill out their forms on our lost C.J. and proceeded to be ushered into the back area, first to the area the animals are placed as they first arrive there. Bryan was given the key that would unlock each of the red doors for us to enter. I am not quite certain why the red doors needed a key when the green doors were accessable without the key.As we opened up one door at a time checking each of the cages for our precious C.J. the barking of the other dogs would grow louder and louder. Of course we talked to each one saying their name and giving them each a few minutes before walking along to the next cage.Their eyes told it all. Could you be here for me? Could I maybe touch your heart strings just enough to have you consider taking me home with you? Each door opening and closing took us closer and closer to the end of the line.As we walked out the exit door with no C.J.our hearts sank one more time. Before leaving we were encouraged to look through their book placed on the counter. It contained peoples names and phone number who had reported an animal found by them along with the type of animal and date found. The pages were full but nothing on C.J. Bryan and I walked slowly out to the car with downcast hearts and drove away towards his home.It grew very quiet in the car except for the music that was playing. Our hearts heavy and with tears threatening to roll down my cheeks. I tried to keep it from happening because I knew Bryan was having a hard time of it also. Bryan began to talk of giving up just knowing C.J. had more then likely gotten hit by a car and was dead. The first three times C.J. got off his chain I had been called by the person who had found him and went to pick Bryan up to get his dog. This time seemed to be the breaker. As we neared his home area I drove slowly knowing that C.J could walk around the corner any minute to be seen by us.Bryan let me know I might just as well drive regular and to get over it. As he got out of the car to go in our faces told it all. Nothing was needed to be said.As I drove slowllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyy away the tears that were close to the surface would be held back no more.As the tears flowed,I talked to our loving Lord, pleading with him to let C.J. be found some how.My thoughts we're a jumbo of feelings and prayers for Bryan,Sam and myself to have this time end happily instead of the way it seemed to be going.I thought of how parents must feel as they some times are put through the wringer with a child of their own who has become lost by either someone snatching them, them getting lost or just plain running away.Oh how their hearts must grieve for them not knowing if they have food ,water and a place to get out of the weather. If only a loving, caring person might be able to rescue them and return them to their loved ones back home.In this situation C.J. is a dog and yes animals are animals but they become your kids just the same.As I drove up Alpine Avenue it had begun to get dark out causing shadows everywhere.Lord,I know you could create a miracle for us yet nothing being impossible with you. With my brain a fuddle,I drove along keeping the car out of going into utter drive while the station on the radio played song upon song.Who were the artists? Ya got me!!!!!!! Tears causing dark streaks down the sides of my face made it look like I thought it was time for Holloween all over again.I continued along north on Alpine Avenue to pick up Hannah to take her to her guitar lesson. She has been taking lessons since summer and is doing very well I might add.Since Annette began her full time job Hannah had not taken a lesson because Earl would have needed to take the girls all with him and tried to keep them quiet in the same room. Its a man giving lessons I believe in his own home.I had told her that I would be willing to come up to Sparta each monday evening to take her to her lessons and this was the first night to do it. I crossed over Leonard Street, drove through a couple of intersections and just happened to glance to my right.I started to look back to where I was driving and quickly threw my eyes back to the right with a sudden leap of my heart and sounds escaping my lips that were alien like.In a gas station lot sitting on a curb by the corner of the road was a homeless looking man with a large dog sitting by his side. Two more quick breaths, with my heart beginning to race unbelieveably fast,I turned the car wheel to drive into the lot right behind the man with the dog.Could it be him?Was this just a mirage of my wanting C.J so bad? I couldn't breath for a moment. Then as I sat there with my eyes glued to him,my heart kept saying over and over,thank-you Lord,thank-you Lord.Oh Lord thank-you for your answer to our prayer. There sat C.J. .I quickly got on my cell phone and called my house to see if Chuck was home to get running up to Sparta for me.He had just gotten into the bath tub and was swimming with the rubber duckie.I told Dan to run the phone to him right away and asked him to jump out, throw on a few clothes and race up to Sparta to do what I had thought I was going to do.What a twist of events suddenly!I quickly told Chuck what was about to take place and got off the phone to get out of the car and proceed over to the man with the dog.I began looking at the dog and he was a dead ringer for C.J..I asked the man about the dog and his first story was that he had paid 100.00 dollars for him from a man. This was his dog and he had already named him. With my heart racing a mile a minute and trying to stay calm I let him know I knew he was not telling me the truth.I told him this was my son's dog who had been missing for a week and a half with us not being able to locate him.As soon as he heard this he began to hold on tighter to the belt and lease that had kept C.J from running off. He insisted with pretend tears that this was his dog and that he loved him very much and that Lady you need to get your hands off of my dog.The stronger he got,the stronger I got as I was trying to get C.J from him.The conversation went alittle like,Oh no you won't,Oh yes I will, Oh now you won't ,Oh yes I will.I The man's story then changed in saying a man had found him and had just given him to the man.He insisted I was not going to take his dog from him.I began losing it at that point. He said I was making him very said because he loved his dog and I told him no,my son loved this dog very much and has been heartbroken since he got loose and he couldn't find him.The man told me to call the police if I wanted to so I took out my cell phone pretending to begin doing just that but was actually about to call Bryan. The man went back to his original story about paying 100.00 for his dog and tried to get my hands off the lease.A great tug of war began to take place and it would not have surprised me to see the police pull up to find out why this lady was harressing this man and his dog.As he pulled mightly on his end of the lease,I pulled back just as hard if not harder toward me.Our voices were no longer quiet but almost shrieking at one another. My cool had up and left me standing there trying not to show to this individual my insides that were shaking.I was not going to walk away from C.J now that I located him.I was suddenly trying to think quickly about how to handle the situation.I told him that if he insisted he had payed 100.00 for this dog which I knew he handn't done that I would give him the 100.00 back and get C.J home to his rightful master. He kept putting up quite a pretense of sadness about me taking his dog and kept changing his story several times.I found myself practically screaming at him to let me have my son's dog. Finally I opened up my cell phone and looked at him and said now what do you want?Do you want the dog or 100.00 ?My composure was a total wreck.I began yanking on the lease to get C.J.over to my car which forced the man to get up on his feet.Once at the side of the car I opened up the back door to try to pull C.J in with the man hanging on for deer life.He told me he wanted his money first and I told him no that C.J was getting in the car first. He said how do I know if you are going to give me my money?I got C.J.in ,closed the back door and proceeded to get in the front seat to get his money. Then came the pretense of loving and losing his dog again until he saw me pulling out some money and excitedly said your going to pay me and realized he better put the sad pretense back in his attitude.I gave him his money, shut the door and got out of there right away.I called Bryan on my cell phone and said I was bringing C.J home to him and Sam right then.As we pulled up to the front of his house,I beeped the horn to let him know we were there. The door swung open wide and Bryan came out.As Bryan gazed into the car to look at C.J his whole face lit up with his smile and I do believe there were a few tears of happieness.Bryan got in and the three of us went back up Alpine Avenue to Pet Smart to get a couple of new collars,a large bag of food,a new tag until he can replace the original one,and a toy.You can't forget his toys.He likes stuffed animals.Everytime he comes over here he either goes downstairs or into RuthAnn's room in search of a stuffed animal. He has a few favorites that end up getting washed after he leaves. We drove back to his house and he realized he had forgotten a lock for the chain and collars,so back we went. The odd thing about this was I could not pin point where that man had been sitting with C.J.I only knew it was on the right hand side of the road between two intersection lights.Back and forth two times never saw the man again or could pin point where I had pulled in.Go figure!I told Bryan that the Lord gave him and Sam a wonderful miracle tonight. I told Bryan it just happened that I needed to go up Alpine Avenue to Sparta to take Hannah to her guitar lessons. There was no other reason to be going in that direction ,on this particular night or at this particular time.Normally when I drop off Bryan,I get on the expressway to go south back to the house. What a miracle from the Lord he was given tonight. He told C.J he was one mighty lucky dog because not just any one would have handed over 100.00 for him . The Lord says "Dear child trust me,put your faith and trust in me".The Lord's timing once more to show the way the Lord works out miracles.
With giving this homeless man the money I knew he would have a nice hot meal and a room without being on the street this evening.I told Bryan these animals become our kids and what wouldn't we do for our kids. The miracle we are thankful for was sitting just as proud and happy as could be on the back seat of my car, going home.Upon getting back to my house, with adrenalin pumping,my body doing overtime,I was mighty glad I didn't have a circuit break inside of me.I had not installed any circuit breakers in me.I took my own life in my hands doing what I did in that neck of the woods,in the dark, wrestling with a homeless man hanging onto a dog.I realize there are people who will say YOU IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But you see I love this dog very much also and what wouldn't we do for our kids if we can.
